Hidden power: water
The power of a capital sometimes lies in the darkness beneath your feet.
The Basilica Cistern was built under Justinian to supply the Great Palace and surrounding buildings with water. Its vaults rest on 336 columns. Before becoming a striking place to visit, it answered an infrastructure need.
It is easy to follow the rhythm of the columns. Ask another question too: why was a reservoir of this size needed? The question begins to reveal the function behind the beauty.
Why might reading the Medusa heads only through mythology hide an important historical process?
Show the answer and source
Architectural pieces from earlier buildings were reused for a new function: the Medusa heads became column bases here.
